Site Difficulties with Current OCC

  1. Lack of Presence
  2. Lack of Entrance
  3. Lack of Public Access

1. Lack of Presence

The Ottawa Congress Centre, as a structure, lacks presence in the downtown core.

  • Its façade does little to distinguish itself from the other buildings and is easily mistaken as an extension of the Rideau shopping centre.
  • From a distance, the OCC is completely absent from the Ottawa skyline.
2. Lack of Entrance

  • The main entrance to the OCC is ambiguous. The lack of a well defined entrance makes the place difficult to find for visitors.
  • The entrance on Colonel By Drive is avoided by pedestrians due to the high levels of vehicle traffic on the street.
  • The lack of visibility of an entrance makes it even more ambiguous for both visitors and Ottawa residents.

3. Lack of Public Access

  • There is little to no pedestrian traffic through the OCC.
  • There is no interaction between the OCC and the Rideau Terrace, which is one of the Few ‘Green Roofs’ in Ottawa, but hardly used, as it lacks visibility.
  • The OCC lacks regular public interaction, which leads to a lack of Public awareness about the OCC, and lowers its presence in the downtown core.
